Rupert's tribute to his grandfather

Good Afternoon Emerson Ralph Waldo once said ‘It is not the length of life, but the depth of life’. It’s fair to say that my granddad lived every day to the fullest. I was thinking to myself when I wrote this tribute what did my granddad mean to people and on evidence of how many people are here today this is a sign that my granddad was loved by so many. If he was able to say this now he would probably say ‘stop with all this fuss'. My granddad’s great loves in his life were sport, history and Doris Day (and not necessarily in that order!). Amidst those pleasures he also had time to explore the world, working from Thailand all the way to Nigeria. A family man at heart, his greatest friend was his wife and my grandmother, if there is light at the end of this dark tunnel, it has to be the fact he will be reunited with her now. As a family we would often discuss which member would do what category on the show ‘eggheads’. It’s fair to say there was not a single category in which Grandad would have been weak in and this is testimony to how quick minded and intelligent he was. A man with traditional values at heart, impeccable manners and smart dress sense, he was a popular man with the ladies(although he tells me its only because of the Polo aftershave) Ah granddad if only it was that easy with women! If he has a weakness you would never know, unless you floated a dairy milk chocolate bar in front of him, it's fair to say I got my chocolate love from him. The depths to which my grandfather would go to find some chocolate was extraordinary, I recall my granny once telling me there was a time when he would go downstairs stating he needed a glass of milk only to be caught holding a big tin of chocolate biscuits, ah gramps you should know my granny didn’t miss a trick! Many of you who knew My Grandad would know he was a man with great humour, I’d once say to him “Grandad what a great looking family we are” and he would chuckle and say’ well no surprise there look where you all got your looks from !’ with a smug facial expression. My granddad in his latter years would say ‘I’ve had a great life so far, if it ended tomorrow I will sleep peacefully knowing I have done everything in my life I wanted to’ . If there was ever a reason to strive to live life to the full and have no regrets, this is it. That is the legacy my grandfather leaves to us to continue (no pressure eh?) Thank you and God bless.
